History and General Information
The Nigerian Dwarf goat is a miniature dairy breed from West African origins.
Their small stature means that they do not require as much space as their larger
dairy goat counterparts and their gentle, friendly personalities make them good
companion pets and easy to handle. Even small children can be at ease with these
little goats. Nigerian Dwarfs are still considered "rare" by the American Livestock
Breeds Conservancy with their numbers totaling about 7,000 in the national registries.
A healthy Nigerian Dwarf doe can produce a surprising amount of sweet milk for her
small size - up to two quarts per day. In addition Nigerian Dwarf milk is higher in
butterfat (6-10%) and higher in protein content than most dairy breeds. However, many
Nigerian Dwarf owners do not raise their goats for milk but for the pleasure and
companionship that these little caprines bring to their lives.
A nonrefundable down payment of 50% is required for any of Bartman Farm's animals that
you want to reserve. All animals must be picked up within 14 days of sale or when weaned.
Payment must be received within 5 business days to hold the animal or it/they will be
added back to the current sales list or retained by Bartman Farm. At the time of pickup,
the balance due must be paid in cash.
At the time of sale, an agreed upon pickup date will
be determined by the Seller and Buyer. If the animal is not picked up within 14 days of
the agreed upon date, the Buyer forfeits the animal as well as the down payment. The animal
will be added back to the current sales list or retained by Bartman Farm. If the Seller
agrees to a new pickup date (for an additional 14 days), a $2 per head per day charge is
incurred on all animals. After the additional 14 days, the Buyer forfeits the animal as
well as the down payment and the animal will be added back to the current sales list or
retained by Bartman Farm.
Adequate transportation must be provided by the Buyer.
All animals must be transported in an adequately sized, covered (winter months and rainy weather only),
ventilated, safe cage/trailer where they may comfortably and safely stand, turn around and
lay down. If you have unsatisfactory/unsafe transportation, Bartman Farm has the right to
refuse the release of the animal. For buyers in the Sanford, NC area we have loaner cages
available free of charge with a small deposit.
The Buyer must provide adequate fencing, food,
care, shelter and fresh water for the animals. It is not acceptable to keep animals tied-out.
Goats will be sold in pairs only unless it is determined that the Buyer already has goats.
All animals are sold "AS IS". Because we cannot control stress that may occur as a result
from shipping, the animals environment or management once they leave the farm, we are not
responsible for any shipping stress, illness, death or their development. We cannot offer
guarantees. You have the right to have any animal you purchase examined at our farm by a
Veterinarian at your expense prior to pick up. All Bucks, regardless of quality, will be
wethered at 8 weeks old and sold as pets or companion animal, unless purchased as a buck.
DISCLAIMER: We are not in the business of selling goats for meat - so please don’t ask.
Nigerian Dwarf Goats are dairy goats. Nigerian Dwarf Goats are browsers not grazers.
If you’re looking for land maintenance they won’t work. Before we will sell a goat you
must have proper shelter, a strong fenced area and proper feed. No goats shall be tethered.
Tethered goats are not happy goats and are vulnerable to predators. No goats will be sold
to live as a single goat. Goats are herd animals and need the companionship of other goats.
We will not wether (neuter) a buck before the age of 2 months due to health risks to the
buck’s urinary track system. Does and Wethers are great as pets because they don’t have any
smell. Bucks have an odor and do some pretty nasty things to keep smelling so bad. It’s their
goal in life to smell as badly as they can because the girls really, really like stinky boys.
All goats will have both sets of CDT and Pneumonia vaccines before they leave the farm and be
disbudded and wethered if not sold as a buck. Once you leave the farm, we can not be responsible
for the health of the animal. We will not knowingly sell any sick animals. For the health of our herd
we do not offer stud service to does.
